That reason is that atheists are insane:
While many in the political blogosphere will no doubt focus on the fact that Adkisson said he hated liberals and gays, the fact of the matter is that the didn’t target a gay club or local progressive political groups, he specifically targeted a church. He did so after expressing beliefs to neighbors in the past that he had an abiding anger against Christianity, an anger that appears rooted in his childhood. The church appears to have been targeted because it embodied at least three things this pathetic human being hated, not just the one or two things I know certain critics will single out as they view the world through their own warped prisms.
I happen to be from a suburb of Knoxville (hint: the one that worked on the Manhattan Project, a liberal attempt to make our great country obtain WMDs and become Communist), and I can tell you with truth that there were no liberals or gays to be shot at, just Christian church-goers. If he really hated liberals and gays, he would have gone to either a college campus or an Abercrombie & Fitch store, respectfully. However, he went to a church. This leads me to believe that the note about hating liberals and gays was forged, perhaps by some Marxist wanting attention.
Marxism is an invasion of the body’s privacy, a cancer upon the politic thinking, a virus that spreads only because of Darwinism and Helioleftism. It is no coincidence that Saddam Hussein, the wellspring of Islamism, was a Marxist. It is no coincidence that Ward Churchill, Richard Dawkins, or PZ Myers, being professors, all sympathize with Marxists, and all encourage abortion, acid, and amnesty. While Marxism continues to invade our societies and infect us with food stamps, the United States Postal Service, and multiculturalism, we allow Marxists to live in our cities. When Marxism is not kept in check by the powers that be, or balanced by society, we end up with lunatics like this man.
This man was angry at conservatives for taking him off of food stamps. Conservatives are well aware that food stamps, like tattoos, increase violence. Some good conservatives took him off of welfare so that we could attempt to help him to live on his own. Unfortunately, he took offense at this, and went on a rampage in a Christian church, and killed two people, and wounded seven. At least those people were all old.
Hopefully, this event will help my fellow Americans to see the light, as it did Miss Malkin. Only by grabbing Marxism by the horns and stuffing it into a steel container can we be ensured that atrocities like this will never happen again.

Are you just trying to stir up some conversation, or is your imagination and paranoia really what it appears to be? I’d like to encourage you to let go of your apparent hostility and look for truth. I admit that some of what you claim might be true. But the hostile tone will cause more harm than good. You start to look a lot like the person you’re railing against. If you really want to help, you might want to look for a new, more civil method (just a suggestion).

OK first of all, foraged means to search, I think you were looking for the word “forged”. Also, who forges suicide notes? Does that not sounds a little bit paranoid?
Second, Unitarians are not necessarily Christians. There is no common set of religious beliefs among Unitarians. In fact, many are atheists, yet you call atheists insane. Are you calling many members of TVUUC insane?
TVUUC is well known for being a socially progressive church, I actually went there when I was a kid and I still know many people there. Most of them are what you would call “the liberal elite”, professors, civil rights lawyers, political activists, you know the people that you think are screwing up America.
I’m not exactly sure what you think the connection is between Marxism and the Manhattan Project. Marxists in the Soviet Union stole the plans for a nuclear bomb from us. Is this what you are talking about? To be fair, I’m not convinced you know what you think the connection is either. Perhaps you need to read a history book.
Also I think many people who live in Oak Ridge would not like to think of it as a suburb of Knoxville.

Thank you for catching that. Misspellings happen when I’m angry.
“Also, who forges suicide notes? Does that not sounds a little bit paranoid?”
Suicide note forgings only occur with every murder case that isn’t solved.
“Second, Unitarians are not necessarily Christians. There is no common set of religious beliefs among Unitarians. In fact, many are atheists, yet you call atheists insane. Are you calling many members of TVUUC insane?”
I live in Oak Ridge, and believe me when I say that the mayor wouldn’t issue an official statement of concern if an atheist died. In addition, if you go to Michelle Malkin’s website, you’ll find out that they were, in large part, Trinitarian Christians. They were murdered becuase they wished to extend a hand up to their fellow neighbor. Liberals hate it when anyone except the government does that.

Knoxville is in general a very conservative city, to such an extent that openly liberal/atheist people have trouble finding jobs, and would surely be attacked for opening a church. The UU members were probably liberal for Knoxville, but still not liberal enough to vote Democrat.

Saddam Hussein was a Marxist that wanted to nuke America. Marxists love WMDs, and also love seizing land from innocent farmers to work on their perverted goals. The Marxists wanted to put something akin to sleeping gas in the nukes, anyways, to be ‘kind’ to our enemies; Oppenheimer was a hero for opposing them and supporting the nuclear option against Japan. Finally, Roosevelt was a Marxist in that he refused to give out contracts to private enterprises.
“Also I think many people who live in Oak Ridge would not like to think of it as a suburb of Knoxville.”
Correct. Oak Ridge has a considerably large moonbat population for Tennessee, and obviously wouldn’t want to be associated with Knoxville, a city that was a beacon of light for foreigners, and offered them a chance to ally themselves with us with the 1982 World Fair.
